Characteristics of a virtuous woman
''My mother always said to me “the bible is
complete, it is a manual/guideline to live and
survive in this world” I never really understood
what she meant, I felt like the bible was just a big,
boring, ancient book with little significance to the
present world we live in.
As i grew older, I realized something; I began to
understand a thing or two about this book. This
book has been in existence for as long as 350BC,
yet, it is still the most sold out book in history till
today. How could the bible manage to remain
significant after all these years? How can we still
relate to situations that happened centuries ago? I
basically thought everything that was/has been
invented has its time of fading away; well the
bible is one that has proved me wrong.
Drifting back to the topic of this article, I must say
that I am not preaching religion or instigating
religious arguments, I only want to share an
inspiring chapter of the bible that I can describe
as ageless. This chapter serves as a code of
conduct and a secret to greatness for women of
all generations, regardless of religion and the
evolving process of the world today.
This chapter is proverbs 31 citing from verse
10-31. I would highlight the main points, but if
you have spare time in your hands, you could go
through this chapter as well, and make your own
observations.
Proverbs 31:10-11 “who can find a virtuous
woman? For her price is far above rubies. The
heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so
that he shall have no need of spoil”
It’s clear, one of the virtues of a virtuous woman
should include “trust” she should be trustworthy
and accountable in everything that she does.
Trust is the foundation of any successful
relationship.
Proverbs 31:13-14 “she seeketh wool and flax,
and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like
the merchants ship; she bringeth her food from
afar”
Who says as a woman, you should be tagged as a
liability?
Who says as a woman, you cannot contribute to
the welfare of your family? A virtuous woman is
not one who sits idle, waiting for anyone to feed
and provide for her, she gets up and work with
her brain and hands.
Proverbs 31:15 “she riseth also while it is yet
night, and giveth meat to her household, and a
portion to her maidens”
People would say “it really isn’t important for a
woman to know how to cook; after all, we are in a
new age” my sisters, do not be deceived, the
world might be changing but certain principles
remain constant. A virtuous woman must feed her
family; she is expected to cater to the well being
of her family.
Proverbs 31:16 “she considereth a field. And
buyeth it; with the fruits of her hands, she planted
a vineyard”
It simply means a virtuous woman should
possess foresight; she should have a mind to
take advantage of viable opportunities, she should
be a risk taker.
Proverbs 31:20 “she strecheth out her hand to the
poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the
needy”
Now, this verse deviates from her household and
herself, a virtuous woman should show
compassion to the poor and needy, regardless of
how little she has. The little you have to give
could go a long way to blessing someone’s life.
Proverbs 31:22 “she maketh herself coverings of
tapestry, her clothing is silk and purple”
Silk and purple signifies royalty, dress like a
queen and you shall be seen as one. I am not
talking about expensive designer clothes; I am
talking about dressing appropriately and investing
in your look.
Proverbs 31:23 “Her husband is known in the
gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the
land”
As a result of her good deeds, her husband is
honoured. A virtuous woman’s life should be
reflected on the people she associates with.
Proverbs 31:25-26 “strength and honour are
clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her
tongue is the law of kindness”
Strength and honour are key attributes of a
virtuous woman. As a woman you should be
honourable, live a life that would inspire others.
Strong women!
Portray strength in every aspect of your life. Even
the bible approves feminism. The tongue as they
say is the determinant of one’s future, use your
tongues wisely, speak kindly to others.
Proverbs 31:27-28 “she looketh well to the ways
of her household, and eatheth not the bread of
idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praiseth her”
Can you see why my dear mother told me that the
bible is complete? Many of us women believe that
a man should be the only provider. My friend!
You’ve got to invest in yourself, get up and
change your orientation, get your hands working.
Feminism this, feminism that, how can you call
yourself a feminist when you cannot provide for
your own needs?
You want to fix Brazilian hair, take a vacation to
the Caribbean, live the luxury life, yet you sit at
home and wait on miracles. Girl! Even the bible
says “heaven helps those who help themselves”
No matter how little you start off with, it doesn’t
matter, you will eventually grow. All you need to
succeed is in your hands. Rome was not built in
a day but the builders had the foresight of the
Rome they wanted, they worked hard towards it
and eventually great Rome became a reality.
Beauty is not everything, in short beauty fades but
the legacy you leave behind will never be
forgotten. Be a queen, join your king and
establish an empire. To all the single beautiful
ladies out there, work hard on building yourself
into a virtuous woman, the true king will find you
in the midst of your discovery. It’s not easy, it is
a gradual stage, but if you understand these
principles and apply them, in due time ye shall be
highly exalted''.
